Dream Big READ! Summer Reading Program Book Display 2012

Here’s the dispay – so far… Dun Dun DUN! That’s right, when I have time I’m gonna add more! A once upon a time to the book pages, a castle in the clouds, a Jack coming out of the book, more glitter… you name it. This will be a fantasy -themed display, since my picture book display will be bedtime story themed, and my teen display will most likely be creatures of the night themed.

This looks amazing! How did you make the book?

Sweat, tears, glue and cardboard. Totally worth it, though – check out the instruction sheet I made a few posts later.

Hi Rachel,
I’m trying to figure out what you used to make the bowed topper? It looks like I could use a shower curtain rod but maybe not. What did you use from the wall to put the clouds on??

My clouds do indeed bow out from the ledge over the children’s book area, and that construction was a way for me to deal with the overly bright fluorescent lights in my building. I strung some twinkle lights behind my beanstalk and book to make it look like ‘magic’. But the fluorescent lights made it impossible to see the twinkle lights. So I had to put them in a shadow for lighting contrast. I cut out a 6 foot diameter half sphere onto really stiff cardboard and affixed it with staples and fishing line to the underside of the overhanging ledge. Then I hung the clouds and lights and ‘Dream Big’ Letters from this ‘awning’. Making things three dimensional helps them come alive for me, and I’ve gotten enough of a response from kids to assume they think similarily to me in this way. My flat displays just don’t get as much attention. You can see a better picture of it if you go to my Book Talk Display Post – since the ‘awning’ isn’t covered by clouds.

Hi there, I work in a school library and the best part of my job is doing the displays. I was so excited when I came across your page. I was wondering if you have done anymore to this since you posted this pic. If so where have you posted it. You mentioned a castle, Jack in the beanstalk ect
Thanks for this page

Isn’t it tragic? I never got around to making my castle or Jack. Summer Reading takes over, and every year I have all these grand schemes that turns out, I don’t have time for. My life is so hard
